For your consideration is an art deco styled Singer 301 Sewing Machine “LONG-BED” - the nicest condition 301 I have ever seen.  Machine is minimally used and was very, very well taken care of!  Be sure to see all the photographs to illustrate the rare and shiny beauty of this machine.

What is the difference between a longbed and a shortbed, you ask?

(Shortbed on the left is 3 1/4 inches and a longbed on the right is 6 inches.)

The machine that was made to do most anything from fine detailing to heavy duty linens and textiles - several thicknesses (QUILTS!) and even the occasional use of thin leather.

In fact, I witnessed the power of this kind of machine firsthand at a local sewing class. Many ladies had the newer machines and they were frustrated at even so much as sewing some folded-over bias tape on fabric because their machines were not able to do it.... jams, thread nightmares and the like were the result. But, the three 301 owners at that same class? Their machines stitched beautifully through the same bias tape creation without so much as a hiccup. The 301 is definitely a powerful machine!

Will this machine sew through leather? Yes. Thin pieces for the occasional repair or quick job. (i.e. I made my son's teddy bear a little western vest with ease.)

The speed and power behind this gear-driven sewing machine is unsurpassed when compared to others in its class.

Quilters, quilters, quilters... you've heard about them, you've perhaps even seen them... but have you simply tried one of these famous Singers? I was shocked by the difference in power when compared to my precious Featherweight 221 and 222K. Am I going to make the switch and replace my beloved Featherweight? But, for the heavier duty quilting work, the 301 does have the potential to outdo the littler machine. Unlike the 221 and 222 which are belt-driven, the 301 is gear-driven.

To show how spacious the opening is, I've photographed my personal quilted fabric.  The opening is 5 inches high. It is 7 1/2 inches from the needle tip to the motor housing.

It is designed for portability with the nice carry-handle on top. So if you are going to class where you'll need power and regular sewing, this machine as I stated earlier, will be perfect for you!

Serial Number NA223176 gives this Featherweight Big Sister (Yes, that's right, sometimes referred to as the big sis to the little 221.) a birthdate year of about 1953 - a 55-year-old machine! I've been asked before what the difference is between the 301 and 301A ... in a nutshell - just the "A". If you'd like further reference and history, click here.

Professionally serviced, this machine is ready to sew any and all types of stitching projects. Also - the original bakelite foot controller & power cord will accompany your machine as well as the original very-nice-condition CASE!

Condition: This 301 glistens and feels like-new. Normally, there is always some wear to the back edge from rubbing on the case, but this machine is just beautiful and shiny! A few minimal sewing marks as seen in the close-up photos. Certainly, the nicest 301 machines I've seen with a glistening finish - grading at an 8+ to a 9!  Motor runs exceptionally strong and sews a nice, even forward and reverse stitch.

The 301 is renowned for its lightweight portability. Quilting classes and sewing get-togethers will be fun to attend with this classic collectible.

Okay, so besides the gear versus belt difference, what else makes this machine different than the Featherweight?

...Well, significantly, the angle of the shank. The Featherweights have short vertical shanks and the 301s have an angled shank, thus making the attachments NOT interchangeable. No - you cannot use your 221 or 222 shank attachments for your 301. They simply will not fit or work properly.

Any other difference?

...Yes, last but not least... the 301 has the ability to lower the feed dogs. Simply turn the adjustment knob and you've now given yourself more sewing options... Free Motion Machine Embroidery, Darning, Buttonholes, etc... anything that requires you to compromise "feeding" the fabric through.
